The Wedding Dynamic – Defining Roles for the Wedding Party

A large number of people go into the wedding ceremony and, often, those involved get a bit confused about what each of their individual roles are. While it is always up to you as to who does what on your special days, there are a few traditions that most brides prefer to stick to when it comes to the roles of those within the wedding party.

Maid of Honor

The Maid of Honor is usually a female that is very important or special to the bride. Generally, this honor goes to a sister or to one of the bride's closest friends. Prior to the wedding, the Maid of Honor often goes along with the bride to select bridal attire, such as the dress and veil, and when she gets her hair and nails done before the wedding. She also is usually the person responsible for throwing the bridal shower. In addition, the Maid of Honor often helps out with writing out wedding invitations and coordinating the bridal gift the bride gives to the bridal party.

On the wedding day, the Maid of Honor usually helps the bride get dressed, participates in the wedding processional, holds the groom's wedding ring, makes sure the bride's dress is positioned correctly during the ceremony, holds the bride's flowers, participates in the receiving line, signs the wedding certificate as a witness, and dances with the Best Man at the reception.

Best Man

The Best Man is someone that is special to the groom. Again, he may be a brother or a best friend. The Best Man is responsible for organizing the bachelor party and coordinating gifts form the couple to the groomsmen. The Best Man also helps the groom select a tuxedo and assists him with getting dressed before the wedding.

On the day of the wedding, the Best Man also holds the bride's ring, signs the marriage certificate as a witness, and participates in the receiving line. At the reception, the Best Man makes a toast to the couple and dances with the Maid of Honor.

Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids are also females that are important to the bride. They are responsible for attending the shower, and they may even help the Maid of Honor with putting it together. They also contribute to the bridal gifts, walk in the wedding processional, participate in the receiving line, and dance with the groomsmen at the reception.

Groomsmen

 Quote of the Day
Reunion after long separation is even better than one’s wedding night.
—Chinese proverb.

The Groomsmen are expected to attend the bachelor party and to contribute to gifts for the groom. Sometimes, Groomsmen also act as Ushers and assist with seating guests before the wedding. They also unroll the wedding runner if one is used. Groomsmen walk in the wedding processional, participate in the receiving line, and dance with the bridesmaids at the reception.

Flower Girl

The Flower Girl is generally a very young girl. Therefore, she does not have duties like others in the wedding party. She does, however, usually carry a flower basket with her as she participates in the wedding processional. She might also toss petals onto the ground in front of the bride as she enters.

Ring Bearer

Like the Flower Girl, the Ring Bearer is usually a young child. During the wedding processional, he usually walks next to the Flower Girl and carries a pillow containing the wedding rings.

Mother of the Bride

Though not officially a member of the wedding party, the Mother of the Bride also has an important role on the big day and before. Prior to the wedding, the Mother of the Bride can help the couple find the perfect site for the wedding and the reception. She can also serve as the main contact for those being hired for the wedding, particularly if the wedding is taking place in the town where the mother lives but the bride does not. Many Mother's of the Bride also enjoy helping to pick out the wedding dress.

The Mother of the Bride is often the best resource for compiling the names and addresses of those needing to be invited to the wedding. She can also talk with the groom's family to determine who should be added to the guest list from their side. Depending on the custom, the Mother of the Bride might also help escort her down the aisle. In Jewish weddings, both parents are responsible for this. In Christian-based weddings, the father walks the Bride down the aisle, but the Mother of the Bride can do this if the father is absent. Otherwise, the Mother of the Bride sits in the first pew before the ceremony and leaves first after it is over and stands in the receiving line.
