Pros and Cons of Hiring a Wedding Consultant

Deciding to hire a wedding consultant can be good or bad depending on what you want. For the bride-to-be who is just too busy, forgetful, or bored with small details in every little thing, this might be a really good option for you. Also if you are planning something fairly large you might not want to have the added stress of dealing with 7 bridesmaids and groomsmen, out of town guests on top of where to get all the things you need and how to get done in the right time frame. A wedding consultant can do great things for you. They can take over all those details and people things you don't want to be bothered with and all under your personal direction. Here are five great pros to having a wedding coordinator.

? If you are too busy, they will do most of the work for you. You will be the one that tells them what color, what style, who need what and where, you are the director. Your consultant will be there to make your wish their command as much as possible. They are going to do all the shopping, organizing and fine details with the budget and information you gave them.

? They speak up to vendors when you might not feel comfortable doing that. These consultants know their vendors well and have a good reputation with them. No vender in his or her right mind is going to try to mess with a consultant, imagine how many potential clients the vendor would lose. Because of this consultant/vendor relationship you can get some great deals and possible some free stuff too.

? They can answer any questions you have about anything to do with weddings, it is their specialty. They can tell you where to get the best dresses, food, invitations, cake, bridesmaids and groomsmen gifts, flowers, place setting and a whole lot more. They know all best places to have a wedding and wedding reception and how much they all cost at specific times per year and where to get the best discounts. They can tell you what is most important to have and what is not absolutely necessary if you are on a strict budget.

? They walk you step by step through the whole wedding process from the planning to the honeymoon. This person is going to do all the tedious work such as mail all the invites, make all clothing appointments, orders the flowers, cake, and food, reserve the venue and reception location, make your honeymoons reservations at your request, and any other arrangement you want them to.

So there are many great benefits for hiring someone else to do this for you. There are also many reasons to not bother. You may like details and want to do all of this type of stuff yourself. You want to have your hands in the dirt and deal with all of it. You may be having a very small wedding and using a free space and don't need someone coordinating places for you. You may not like a traditional wedding style or anything near it so your needs won't be easy to please and so doing it yourself is simply better. Here are some cons to having a wedding coordinator.

 Historical Quote
Men may conseile a womman to be oon,
But conseiling nis no comandement.
He putte it in oure owene juggement.
For hadde God comanded maidenhede,
Thanne hadde he dampned wedding with the deede;
—Geoffrey Chaucer (1340?–1400)

? You might not have a say in everything they do and not want to be left out of the finer details. Maybe you want to look at every flower, send your own invites, or just be the most active person doing the legwork. Maybe you are picky and want to know exactly who, what, when, and where and not knowing will make you more nervous and stressed out. It would be a waist of money to pay another person 10-15% of you wedding expenditure if they didn't do anything.

? They may make judgments about things that you might not agree with about how and what you want done. Maybe you want to make all your invites, have your best friend's mom make your wedding cake, or have everyone in casual dress at the ceremony. This might not be something that a wedding coordinator would like to hear because they make their money based on what you spend. So if you are having a pretty much do-it-yourself free or low cost wedding, it will not be worth it for either of you. Having someone tell you that you need 150 dozen flowers or an 8-tiered cake is going to stress you out and waste your time.

? They can be very expensive the more you have them do or spend. If you are having an expensive wedding, you will be paying an additional 10-15% of your total expense as the coordinator's fee. In some cases that could be your second honeymoon if your wedding not cheap. If you have a $7000 dress that your coordinator located for you, you will be paying him or her $700 alone just for the dress. That doesn't include venue, food, invites, and other item. You could be talking about thousands of possible dollars in some cases.

So think long and hard about what best suits you and what you are budgeted for. You find that what worked for your co-worker just doesn't work for you.
