When most people think of bus travel, they have some very specific images in mind, and those images aren't always pleasant. In many movies, it looks like agony, and sometimes the rides really are unpleasant. Although This image of bus travel is quite popular with a lot of people, it is not really the whole story. Bus companies have really advanced their business practices in the past few years, and there are more options for bus tours them ever before.

As a matter of fact, travel by bus can be one of the best ways to explore the country. If you are willing to pay a little or more to ensure getting a seat on a comfortable bus, you can really live it up. One of my friends absolutely swears by charter buses. As a matter of fact, he is not gone by plane on a vacation in years. It is simply bus travel or nothing for him. On the travel buses, you can listen to music, chat with friends, stop to get food every now and then, and use the bathroom without pulling off the road. Best of all, he doesn't have to drive – something that anyone can appreciate after hours and hours driving down the road

Of course, there are many different kinds of bus travel available. Not all cities have good bus systems, but the quality really affects your quality of life. Nowadays, taking the bus isn't just a matter of assuaging your conscience. It can save you a lot of money with gas prices as they are. In Portland where I live right now, bus travel is one of the most popular ways to get around. Using the light rail and the bus system, people go almost everywhere. Although the transportation could be better, in general it is pretty reliable.

Of course, bus travels are also a great way to explore a new city. Every time I am in a new place, I love to take a tour bus around. Usually, these tours are anywhere from one to three hours – long enough to really see a good part of the city, but not too long to keep your interest up. Not only will you get to see some great sites, but you will also find out about things that you might want to check out in more detail later. Usually, it is fairly affordable, and it is always guaranteed to be a good time.
