One of the most daunting things you can do in your life is raise a family. Parenting skills are not something we learn in school, but there are many we have that we are born with, even if we don’t know it. Though some things are instinctual, we often push these feelings aside thinking that we need expert guidance. Though there may be times when you want to turn to the experts, you should always rely on your instincts because they won’t steer you wrong.

Your parenting skills we be much like the ones your parents had. You may not remember when you were an infant, but it is still there in your mind somewhere. You may do things just like your mom or dad did, even if you don’t realize what is going on. Your parents will though, and they may take great joy in watching you with your children, and they may even praise you for your parenting skills. There are parents that will find fault in anything you do though, and that is when you may start to question yourself.

 Historical Quote
Living by basic good-mothering guidelines enables a mom to blend the responsibilities of parenthood with its joys; to know when to stand her ground and when to be flexible; and to absorb the lessons of the parenting gurus while also trusting her inner voice when it reasons that another cookie isn’t worth fighting over, or that her child won’t suffer irreparable trauma if, once in a while, Mom puts her own needs first.
—Sue Woodman (20th century)

If you really feel scared, you can buy many books that give you insight into parenting skills that you may feel you are missing. These books are great for reference, and you can always confer with your pediatrician if you just aren’t sure which way to go. Parenting skills are even something that can be forgotten between children, and that is just because we often doubt ourselves. Though you may think the second child will be easier, you may feel the same sense of panic you felt when you brought your first child home. The fear may go away a lot sooner though, and you will fall into old knowledge quickly enough.

When you face the day your first grandchild is born, you may be bursting to share your parenting skills with your children. Though this is understandable, make sure you don’t overwhelm them. Remember what it felt like when you had your first child, and remember that they want to enjoy the journey as much as you did. They will need your guidance when it comes to parenting skills, but wait for them to come to you. Accept that they may do some things differently, and you will have a better relationship in the long run. They’ll need you, but it’s best for you to wait until they come to you.
