Spelling Games For Kids

Whereas some kids are natural born spellers, others are not. Usually this is simply due to a lack of interest on their part. As an activity, it just doesn't grab them. As a parent or teacher, you know that spelling is an important skill in communicating with others and that later on, that kid may be penalized for poor spelling, as in en essay or job application. It's up to us to devise fun spelling games for kids.

The conventional Scrabble® board game is an excellent way to turn spelling lists into a fun spelling game. You might begin by playing with the letters, separating vowels and consonants to reinforce the relationship between the two. While consonants are verbally formed, mostly using tongue motions, vowels are distinguished by an opening of the mouth. Have an age appropriate dictionary freely available.

At each spelling session, begin with picking up various letter blocks and making the sound of that letter. Do this for ten or fifteen minutes. Then ask the child to think of a word they'd like to spell. When you ask for input from your student, you'll find them far more enthusiastic than when a stiff sheet of paper containing words of your choice is presented.

Remember, your goal is to make fun spelling games for kids. You can even make goofy words, which may not be found in the dictionary. It really doesn't matter if your child gets silly and tries to stump you with “woofie”. The point is to make the child see the relationship between sounds and letters.

Have patience in your quest for new and fun spelling games for kids. If the child picks a difficult word, you have an opportunity to review sounds and letters. Let them guess what the first letter of “penguin” might be.

 Bit of History
Kids won’t come out and thank you each and every time you make a decision they aren’t totally fond of....But in their hearts kids know you’re doing your job, just like they are doing their job by arguing.
—Fred G. Gosman (20th century)

Other fun spelling games for kids involve the age or grade related spelling card packs, about the size of a pack of cards. This is a more conventional approach, but is valuable if not overdone as an activity. Too much like a classroom!

The old Hangman's Noose has been around for a very long time, yet is still a favorite with kids. For the reluctant speller, your spelling games for kids must be fun. They'll learn quicker, because they enjoy doing the activity.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of online spelling activities. As parent or teacher, you do your homework and find the ones that look to be the most appealing spelling games for kids. Assuredly, you'll find many, with interactive features and cartoon characters which entice the child to find the correct solution. Often these spelling games reward the child with bonus points or some spectacular graphic display declaring them the winner.

There's an inherent bonus for you in that you'll have more one on one time with the student. This is rewarding for you and fun for the kids. Yes,they will thank you later!
