Fires are tragic events that often leave families with nothing. The interesting thing is however that many home fires can be avoided. Many home fires are products of human error. When humans do things that are considered fire hazards, the risk of a home fire increases dramatically. Knowing the hazards and how to avoid them is crucial to keeping your home safe. If you are interested in knowing more, read these five tips in averting home fires to learn how to keep your family and your home safe from a home fire.
Candles
Candles can make a home seem extremely cozy and can also add wonderful fragrance. Candles are often used to "set the mood" or just to clear out a musty smell in your home. No matter what the reason or occasion however, candles should always be used responsibly. Many home fires are started due to candles. Some users may forget to blow the candles out when they leave their house or before they go to bed. These are some of the most common reasons for home fires.
Although most candles are not too dangerous, they can quickly become hazards. To be sure your candles are always under control, be sure to use candles in glass holders. Make sure the holder will envelope the entire candle and contain any flame. Jar candles are great and are much less likely to burn out of control. Also, be sure to always check all of your candles before leaving the house or going to bed. A good rule is to make a quick "run through" the house to blow them all out before either event.
Matches
Although we have all heard it our entire lives, matches do indeed have a place in a household. That place is anywhere a child cannot reach. Matches and lighters are interesting to children of all ages. Older children will especially love to play with them. One might think their small children who don't fully understand the consequences would play with matches, but it is most always a curious older child that starts a home fire by playing with them. If a lit match is dropped on the carpet or held near curtains, the house could go up in flames within minutes. These fabrics are so flammable that you would barely have time to get out before disaster struck. Be sure all children, even teens know how to respect fire and use matches and lighter responsibly.

Many people leave each day for work, forgetting to unplug their irons, hair appliances, or the coffee pot. New models of these appliances usually have an automatic shut-off for forgetful users. However some of the older models don't. Leaving these things plugged up all day is a fire hazard. This is especially true if they are sitting on a flammable area. If you leave your curling iron sitting on a counter all day, chances are the counter will catch on fire. By the end of the day, you might not even have a home to come to.
Limit Combustible Contents
Sometimes people will store items like kerosene or gasoline in their homes. This is a terrible idea and can lead to a home fire fast. You should always store these combustible items in an outdoor area. You can keep them in a detached garage or shed if you like. Keeping them inside however is far too dangerous. The smallest spark could cause a fire too big to control.
Use Fireplaces Wisely
Have a fireplace in your home is a lovely thing. You can snuggle with your family by the fire for extra warmth and comfort. Fireplaces however should be used wisely. Always use a fire screen when there is a fire going in your fireplace. This will ensure that no loose spark will catch your floor on fire. Also, be sure to always keep your damper open. This will let the necessary smoke and fire escape through the chimney. Be sure the fire is completely out before you go to bed or to work. Never leave a fire unattended! Do this and your fireplace will be much more enjoyable. If you don't use it wisely, it will only be a danger to your family.
