When you are expecting your first child, you experience emotions you never knew you had. Your world begins to change and there are times you are not sure if you want to jump off or stay for the ride. You found out your pregnant and you know that this is something you have no reference point. You read books, ask friends, and search the net yet you know there is nothing that can completely prepare you for the most amazing experience of your life. You may be an expert at everything in your life and now you are standing on the edge of cliff and have no idea what to expect.

When the excitement of knowing you are pregnant wears off, you will either begin with morning sickness or for some of you, you are sick thinking you have the flu and you soon discovered your flue was going to last around nine months! As you near your seventh month family and friends start asking if you have the baby's room set up, what do you want, what do you need? They are overjoyed that you having your first baby and you often want to sit and cry because you are not sure you are as happy as they are. You think you should be used to these emotions by now but you are not. In your heart, you are relieved you are getting a baby shower because you have no idea what you should get. Often times you walk into a baby store and think you need to buy everything because you have nothing for a baby. Of course, that is not practical, but face, it being pregnant is not practical either.

A few women at your shower, mostly those who have had kids, buy you practical things like baby shampoo, lotion, diapers and such and you say thank you not fully realizing what a life saver those items are going to be in a few short months. You also receive baby towels and washcloths and cute little clothes and you are grateful and think, "Do I have enough now? You will soon find out you will never have enough welcome to the wonderful world of children. Therefore, here is a simple checklist of items and/or things you will need as the day approaches for you and your child to meet.

Bottles – whether you breast feed or not you want to have a small supply of bottles on hand for emergencies

Breast Pump – if you are nursing this will be very beneficial (especially if you are planning on going back to work after the birth of your child)

Breast Pads – you need something to soak up your new leaking breasts!

Diapers, diapers, and more diapers – you cannot have enough of these. You will be amazed how something so small can make so many messes! You may want to consider in signing up for a diaper service that will bring you diapers and haul away those messy ones,

Baby shampoo, lotions, oil, and powder – again, the more you can stock up on these the better.

 Quote of the Day
The colicky baby who becomes calm, the quiet infant who throws temper tantrums at two, the wild child at four who becomes serious and studious at six all seem to surprise their parents. It is difficult to let go of one’s image of a child, say goodbye to the child a parent knows, and get accustomed to this slightly new child inhabiting the known child’s body.
—Ellen Galinsky (20th century)

Cotton swabs, cotton balls along with, rubbing alcohol to clean the area of the umbilical cord. Rubbing alcohol will help it dry up and fall off faster.

Baby clothes – now this can be tricky you may want only to buy a few to begin with because babies come in all sizes. If you buy the newborn sizes, you may find them to be too big or small! You do want to have several baby gowns and onesies on hand along with socks and booties to keep their little toes warm.

You can never have too many baby blankets and receiving blankets on hand. You will use them in many different ways the first of which is to swaddle that bundle you spent nine months waiting for.

Even though you do not use cloth diapers, having a couple dozen is a smart move. They make great towels to through over your lap or shoulder when you are burping your baby you have not yet figured out that a burp does not mean to bring the food up at the same time!

As you are preparing for everything you need for the new baby, do not forget to buy yourself some things for pampering. It is very easy to be caught up in the baby and neglect yourself. So go and buy your favorite bubble bath or soaking salts. Invest in those items that make you relax and feel special because you deserve it. Relax; you will soon be a new mother. A whole world of new opportunities and possibilities await you.
